A highlight of the 2003 Chiang Mai Sixes was the first ever(as far as
we know) hardball cricket match between junior representatives of Thai
schools in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. The match was played on the main Sixes
tournament pitch, on the morning of Finals Day at the Sixes (Saturday
April 5). Making it even more of a special occasion was the presence of
Mr. Ashraful Huq , the recently appointed first Chief Executive of the
Asian Cricket Council (ACC), who flew in during the Sixes & Chiang
Mai Sawasdee Cup week to see for himself the progress being made in developing
junior cricket in Thailand.
The hardball challenge match among the Chiang Mai and Bangkok juniors
was played according to Sawasdee Cricket rules and scoring method. While
the match showed obvious signs of some first- time nerves among the youngsters,
it was clearly a great experince for them. The boys from Bangkok , who
had spent most of the week at the Chiang Mai event helped by some generous
sponsorship from The Southerners CC, narrowly defeated the Chiang Mai
boys by a score of 193 to 190 from their allotted overs. Afterwards, Ashraful
Huq presented the trophy to the captain of the winning team.
(The Chiang Mai juniors gained their revenge a few weeks later when they
visited Bangkok for a weekend of coaching & matches in a triangular
competition against junior teams from Chonburi and Bangkok, the Chiang
Mai lads came away as the winners. )
