Heatstroke and Heat Exhaustion


Strenuous exercises in hot conditions generation by muscle activity can lead to heat exhaustion or even heatstroke. Heat Exhaustion develops gradually, but with Heatstroke it often occurs suddenly and can lead to loss of consciousness in minutes.

Cause

Lloss of water and salt from the body, usually in those not used to exercising in hot or humid environments, or those unwell with such as diarrhoea or vomiting.

Symptoms

  • Headache Dizziness Confusion
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Sweating with pale clammy skin
  • Cramps in limbs or abdomen
  • Rapid weakened pulse and breathing

Treatment

  • Move to cool surroundings.
  • Replace lost fluids and salts e.g. take water and electrolytes.
  • If unconscious place in the recovery position.
  • Check regularly breathing, pulse and responses.
  • Get medical help.

Silly advice:

  1. Early nights.
  2. Low intake of alcohol.
