There are usually 32 teams in the tournament split initially into two sections of 16 (Players’ Section and Gentlemen’s Section). In 2016 we have 34 teams so 18 teams play in the Players' section and 16 in the Gentleman’s section). To avoid delays in a packed schedule, all matches (except finals) are played in pairs. So, the first innings (batting) of Match A is followed by the first innings (batting) of Match B. Then the second innings of Match A is played, followed by the second innings of Match B, and so on. In 2016 there are 34 teams competing which means there are extra games to accommodate so the format in the Players' Section is very different to what normally happens.
The Players' Section will consist of 18 teams and the Gentleman’s Section will consist of 16 teams. The Players' Section will be split into six groups of three teams. Each team in Group A will play each team in Group B (similarly Groups C and D and Groups E and F). The results and points from all nine games will be assembled into single tables (Table AB, Table CD and Table EF).
The Gentleman’s Section will be arranged in four groups of four teams, played as a Round Robin.
Winner of each group plus each second-placed team plus the best two third-placed teams in the Players’ Section split into two groups of four. Each team plays two of the other teams in its group dependent on finishing position in Round One.
Remaining third-placed team plus all fourth-place teams plus best two fifth-placed team in the Players’ Section, split into two groups of three; round robin.
Remaining fifth-placed team plus all sixth-placed teams teams of the Players’ Section plus winner of each group in the Gentlemen’s Section, split into two groups of four; each team plays two of the other teams in its group, dependent on finishing position in Round One.
All second-placed teams plus best two third-placed teams in the Gentlemen’s Section, split into two groups of three; round robin.
Remaining two third-placed teams plus all bottom teams in the Gentlemen’s Section, split into two groups of three; round robin.
Best is determined by: (a) most points in a group, (b) head-to-head results in case of ties in a group, and (c) run rate off the bat.
Note: At the discretion of the tournament organisers, the second round placements may be adjusted to avoid a team meeting a team that it played in the first round.
Semi-Finals in each competition: winner group A plays runner-up group B; winner group B plays runner-up group A.
Final in each competition: winners of the semi-finals.
