| The Chiang Mai Sixes is like
any tournament. There are strong teams and weak teams, so in order to give
everyone a chance we try to organize the matches so teams end up playing other teams of equal ability. First, there is round-robin play in which teams play within their initial groups. Second, based upon Round 1 results the teams are placed into 5 Divisions of play for the second half of the tournament.
In our case we have the following :
- Cup Division The top group. This is normally made
up of pretty fair standard club and up and coming cricketers.
- Shield Division - The 2nd group. Not as good and some
older cricketers.
- Bowl Division - The 3rd group, contain both recognized cricketers and the best social players.
- Plate Division - The 4th group generally comprised of good social players..
- Spoon Division - The lowest group which generally is comprised of social players.
The Order of Play
In the beginning of the tournament, these groups are not classified,
through the organizers know most of them fairly well, so do a rough pre classification
of 4-5 teams per group in Round 1. In general terms the rounds work as follows (depending in any given year on the actual number of teams entered in the tournament):
- Round 1 is a round Robin where every team plays every
other team in their group. Based upon the tournament format, the record of each team in Round 1 play is used to place the teams into their division for Round 2.
- Round 2 is then a competition within the Divisions
to find the finalists within each division.
Special Divisions
Old Crock's Division - Limited to players of age 65 and older, the Old Crock's division plays one or two matches, depending upon the available time.
Ladies Division - Exactly what is says. Initially there were two ladies teams, comprised of locals and visitors. In recent years, this division has expanded to three teams, one of local women and two of young Thai women who have learned to play cricket in the Sawasdee cricket program.
