Explanation of the Divisions

by Maurice Bromley

The Chiang Mai Sixes is like any tournament. There are strong teams and weak teams, so in order to give everyone a chance we try to divide the teams into Divisions.

In our case we have the following :

  • Cup Division The top group. This is normally made up of pretty fair standard club and up and coming cricketers.
  • Shield Division - The 2nd group. Not as good and some older cricketers.
  • Bowl Division - The 3rd group.
  • Plate Division - The lowest group amongst the recognized cricketers.

The Order of Play

In the beginning of the tournament, these groups are not classified, through the organizers know most of them fairly well, so do a rough pre classification of 4-5 teams per group in Round 1. In general terms the rounds work as follows (depending in any given year on the actual number of teams entered in the tournament):

  • Round 1 is a round Robin where every team plays every other team in their group:
    • The winners of each group and the best 2nd place teams go forward to the next round as Cup Division.
    • The rest of the 2nd place finishers plus the best 3rd places go forward as Shield Division
    • Remaining 3rd Place & 4th place teams go into the Bowl.
    • The rest play as Plate Division.
  • Round 2 is then a competition within the Divisions to find the finalists within each division.

Special Divisions

Spoon Division - This is strictly for the social players, who come to Chiang Mai more for the social side than the cricket. In order not to spoil the cricket of the regular players this groups starts and finishes as a group. There are 6 teams in this Division.

Challenge Division - Every year the Chiang Mai Sixes invites some current and past international players who have (or still) played for their country. These players play with the amateurs, but in order for everyone to see them playing in their own class we have 1 - 2 matches where they play together.

Ladies Division - Exactly what is says. Since we have had a ladies Division, the Chiang Mai ladies (Chiang Mai Chassies) have been unbeaten. Their competition is from a group of visiting ladies under the team name The Dixie Belles. They play 3 matches - 2 on the childrens's pitch and their final on the main field.
