Trevor Chappell (TC)
Trevor, Trevor, Trevor …….. what have you done?
For years, Trevor led the Warathais on their quest for Cup glory, and generally at the start of the tournament, it looked promising. But, usually by Thursday, the late nights had taken their toll and kits were packed (again) for another tilt the following year. It can only be assumed that by leading this group on tour, Trevor has decided to bypass the early days of the week and just start at Thursday. And with the average age of the touring group pushing 60, he will need to pack rubber gloves, incontinence pads and colostomy bags just to get them through the welcome cocktail party.
Darrell Mepham (Monster)
Darrell has become the Maythai’s answer to World Vision, helping many troubled youths from the streets into luxury lifestyles of the rich and famous. As this is Darrell’s eleventh tour into Chiang Mai (and his first without the regular touring group) it can only be hoped that A). He finds his way to Chiang Mai and B). He can find his way to the bar from the sideline tents!
Stan Spink (Humpty)
Stan returns for his tenth tour of Chiang Mai in the irregular role of tour organiser. As always, Stan has gone for the retro look with last year’s Maythais playing strip being dusted off and rebadged 2010. Hopes this year that he won’t have to don the whites, but many of the opposition teams pray he does!
Keith Roddom (Chef)
The colourful “Chef” returns to Chiang Mai for the fourth consecutive tour, and as usual the whole town waits with baited breath to see which Chef arrives. Will it be the quiet shy reserved tourist or will it be the boisterous extroverted vagrant that came last year, the year before and the year before that. Is investigating radical new surgery in an attempt to add two more arms, because he believes 4 beers are better than 2.
David Barrett (Smash)
Like Chef, Smash returns for his fourth tour and as last year’s Maythai’s team captain will now take a back seat behind TC in all things relating to team management. Is quite excited about the prospect of playing with TC, because after last year’s touring group, he might actually get to play a game with someone else who can at least hold a bat!
David Madden (Salt)
Toured Thailand last year as if it was his own personal Monopoly board, buying oxen and rice farms at every opportunity. This year he returns a more stable tourist, and will endeavour to add houses and hotels to every piece of real estate and asset he procured last year. Turned out to be the rookie of the tour last year, so as it is second trip, all he needs is a night in the local lockup to complete his Thailand adventure.
Tim Camakamis (Socrates)
Tim turned out to be last year’s accidental tourist, leaving it until the last minute to decide and then shock, horror playing with the Postels. Has found his way back to his spiritual roots as a Maythai and like Smash is one of the few that TC might be able to get a decent performance out of. Really, looking at this tour group – Socrates “the wise” – I think not.
Mark Woods (Woodsy)
Mark is returning to Chiang Mai for his second tour and little is known about his past efforts or performances. It will be no small order for Woodsy to play every match this trip, but being the supreme athlete he is, every minute detail will be attended to over several ales the night before. Is really hoping Thommo goes, because it will be great to have company in someone’s garden the morning after.
Gary Foster (Gazza)
Gary tours for the third time and will have no problems fitting in with this motley group of 2010. Will no doubt enjoy the tour as he will be the go to guy for anything and everything the group needs. Watch for him late at night as he has a serious penchant for room service.
Robbie New (Chew)
Robbie returns with the tribe in tow and no doubt will look forward to the escape of sixes cricket. Can bat and bowl, skills not held by many this year, so expect TC to call on him regularly – but only if he’s allowed to play!
Peter Thomson (Thommo)
Thommo comes back to Chiang Mai for the sixth time, so obviously has many passports to travel on. Needs to find his form of 2008 to force his way into the playing group but expectations for this are not high. Might get his desire this year and be able to field many cans from the sanctuary of the bar during game times.
Andrew Green (Greeny)
Not much is known about Greeny, other than he has played before with the Postels group. However, the “what goes on tour, stays on tour” philosophy does not stick real well with this mob, so there will be plenty of scandal and gossip to write about him for next year’s trip (mostly rumours). We hope he enjoys himself as a first time Maythais tourist and is welcomed as another member of our touring family.
Sue Liddell
Long time supporter of the touring group, Sue takes over the mantle of Chief Scorer for this year’s tournament. We wish her all the best in her new role, and Sue, always remember (for this tour group) a good scorer beats a better batsmen everytime!
