Trevor Chappell - “TC” – Tour No.8.
At some stage during the week, some observers may think they are watching the Australian Test team when, not for the first time, this side led by Ricky Ponting – oops I mean Trevor Chappell will be deemed as false favourites to win the competition only to loose their way in the later stages of the week. In his 8th tour with the Warathais, Trevor hopes to inspire his weary warriors for one last dash at success, but if he gets through to Sunday he will be a truly happy man.
Warren Pugh – “WOKKA” – Tour No.10.
Wokka is once again making his annual pilgrimage to the home of cricket in Thailand. He will be his usual lovable happy self on tour and will be seen enjoying all manner of delights while in Chiang Mai. Will be out till the wee hours every night but like a true stayer is always able to back up the next day.
Steve Christie - “CRUNCH” – Tour No.12.
This cricketing diehard returns to Chiang Mai for his 12th tour and hopes to find that rare form that made him Player of the Tournament in 2001. At his age, we all hope he can find the bathroom, but if not, a quiet brew in the confines of the Warathais tent will suffice. Rumours still abound that Humpty Dumpty never fell off the wall – Crunch pushed him!
Ian Liddell - “REDS” – Tour No.12.
Ian has taken a pole-axing this year with his exposure to the global credit crisis, when it emerged that he had dreams of creating a “IPL Super team” to compete at this year’s tournament. A devalued Aussie dollar gave him no other choice but to once again tour with his fellow Warathais, a trip he has made religiously for the past 12 years. If the stock market continues its downhill plummet I.K. Liddell may soon become I.O.U. Liddell.
Sam Gilmour – “MULE” - Tour Virgin.
This son of Australian cricketing royalty is touring Chiang Mai for the first time. Sam is the current 1st grade Captain at home and is the team’s marquee signing. As most of us know the pace here in Chiang Mai can be quite frenetic, but Sam needs to be on his toes to guard against all the sins and vices that have seen better men than him fall at the first hurdle. We all believe that Sam is only touring so he can compare notes with his father about the difficulties and the temptations of cricket tours abroad.
Ben Harding – “MR BIG” – Tour Virgin.
Another tour rookie. Ben may seem that wet behind the ears you could build a water park, but looks can be deceiving. He has sort the experience of Simon Porter to help him through the tribulations of touring in Thailand, so my guess is by Wednesday, Ben won’t be fit enough to play anyway. Mr Big will be found cruising around the night time hot spots looking for “Mrs Big” and will leave no stone unturned to satisfy his appetite.
Simon Porter – “SPORTER” – Tour No.5.
Simon is touring Chiang Mai for the fifth time and is looking to make up for lost after not touring last year. Has picked himself up a protégé and is looking forward to schooling Mr Big in the Dark Arts of nocturnal activities in Chiang Mai. Is a very experienced campaigner and may even play some decent cricket on this trip. Let’s hope so!
