FLOGGERS AND ROBBERS

A team of local expatriates working in the Tobacco Industry… Floggers being the sellers of and Robbers being the buyers of tobacco leaf. However, this year… it’s a floggers affair!

Dave Hird (Zimbabwe) - Captain. Dave makes up about 95% of the Floggers team with great expectations being placed on him with both the ball and the bat. Whilst, he may have lost a yard or five of pace since his first appearance many, many moons ago, as one of the longest serving 6’s players on the team and despite having gone through his now ritualized annual “this is my last year” speech, we still have high hopes and prayers he will carry us all for “Oh alright, just one more year”….

Wally Pohl (Zimbabwe). As another veteran and Zimbabwean giant, Wally will return to the Floggers as self appointed spokes/shoutman and fines chairman once again his year.  Having been away from us for a year or two now, we expect him to come back strong with plenty of his huge sixes and hopefully for all of our sakes less of his usual after game disciplinary slammers.

Simon Grant (Zimbabwe). Simon is better known for his baseball prowess than cricket and following the extraordinary number of beamers we all took in our one and only net practice he shall remain as keeper once again, having done a solid job by Floggers standards behind the stumps in ‘08.  If you come across him and struggle to understand a great deal of what he is saying, don’t worry, neither do most of us, just smile, back away slowly and rest assured that he means well….

John Wood (Wales). At three and a half feet tall and hailing from some place near England called ‘Whales,’ it is safe to say that John suffers from short-man syndrome among many others. After trying to cover for his obvious performance inadequacies with supposed broken ribs in ’08  we’re still waiting to experience his claims of youth “county” cricketing guru!

Mike Green (Zimbabwe) – Manager. Mike normally prefers to help prop up / dance around / sleep on or under the now rickety Floggers bar but has been known to pull out the surprises on the pitch.  Definitely a player who prefers the social side of the 6’s than actually stepping onto the pitch as it normally requires him putting his shirt back on. However, if we can manage to stem the flow of beer tokens for the bar until after the match we are expecting great things.

Andrew Papadopoulos. Who would ever have thought to hear right arm over and ‘Olive Picker Papadopolopolopolpus’ in the same sentence. He was our Man of the tournament last year… handy all rounder and whilst it being his first year at the 6’s was a true diplomat of the floggers both on and more importantly off the field!!!!

Chris Allen. This was definitely the most difficult profile to write as putting Chris into words is no easy feat.  All we can say is that both ourselves and even more so Chris are praying that he is never required to leave his barstool and don a vest and wield a bat, ball or anything more dangerous than a plastic glass of Gin and Tonic…..
