2007 Team

The BG's were founded in 1947 and hail from Dog Sh*it Park in Goodmayes, Essex.  We have a long tradition of touring the scenic playing fields of England and over the last decade, have also dis-graced arenas in Australia, Europe, USA and SE Asia. We are also the current holders of the Bulmers Ice Cricket World Championships held in Tallinn, Estonia 2007.

2008 will be our fourth Chiang Mai Sixes. We have been promoted from the Fork to the Spoon Competition this year. Unlike previous years, we have a few cricketers turning up, but unfortunately they are coming to socialize and are unavailable for selection. Our best chance of recognition is another tile on the bar.  We are more memorable to the Mama Sans and sponsors than the organizers and our opponents.

Raj Boparai (Boparee)

Our talisman, skippa’ and only half decent player. Rarely loses a toss but that’s not why we all call him a complete . . . . . . !  Raj is the eye of the storm.  When we are all getting caught, bowled, swinging and missing, watching it disappear into the hammocks, falling over in the gutter, Raj will be there for the team, carefully guiding our guide, paying a bill, smoothing over trouble with Inn Keepers and taking a keen interest in The Dixie Belles.

Chris Love (Lovee)

Now based in Bangkok and playing with The Southerners the extra practice and rubbing shoulders with good players has had no effect whatsoever and he is still sh*t. If cricket was played in the showers or at the bar then it would be a different story.

Mark Molinari (Mole)

The “Badger’s” handicap is now similar to his batting average which are both in single figures. Mole had an injury interrupted campaign last year but the back is in full working order again so unless he leans on the bar on the boundary or at The Sugar Shack too often, we can expect some entertainment from Mole.

Jarnail Dail (Jenny)

Fortunately, Jenny’s transfer to the LA Galaxy has not affected his availabilitee for Chang Mai. It’s great to see a player with his priorities in the right place. A certain selection for the All-Stars team if it was Sawasdee Football or International Massage.

Sarbjit Rai (Little Tinkle)

Sarbee enjoys being Thai’d up. Whether in the nets or out in the centre, Sarbee spends his time concentrating on his middle stump. The trouble is that he is unable to control his swing and cost us a lot in extras and joiners last year! Sarbee will probably go up country for a while.

Manjit Matharu (Dread)

The current holder of “Cookies Ashes”. Our Ambassador in all things social.  Dread’s abilitee to network on and off the field has probablee been our pitfall in the last couple of years. But success comes at a price! About 800bht, unless inflation has hit Chiang Mai.

Adam Sheekey (Cheekee)

Now recovered from his broken leg and finally finished his extensive course of penicillin, Cheekee is making his Chiang Mai debut. If Cheekee doesn’t fall down “The Stairway to Heaven”, get tripped by a “Foxy Lady”, get blinded by “The Spotlight” or get bashed by a “Beaver” then we can expect a few runs from the recentlee retired club captain. He does have a sweet tooth so The Sugar Shack could be his downfall.

Abbas Mirza (Mirz)

The Asian Shane Warne – slightlee overweight and not many can pick his wrong ‘un text messages out of the back of his hand. The consume-mate all-rounder is making his comeback this year and while batsmen and bowling attacks have little to fear, restaurants and bars are in for a big bashing.

"Remember! Team spirit is built in the showers."
