The Umpires

John Bell - Back in Thailand and after ruining himself in Bangkok, and probably ruining Bangkok in turn, has made his svelte way to Chiangmai again, where he has been making his presence felt, firstly as a player and more latterly as an umpire, since 1988 and the initial Sixes Tournament. He will reminisce with the best of you in to the very small hours, as long as you keep his glass brimming!

Barrie Drake - Joined the Band of the Deaf & Blind last year. An experienced and competent umpire who became an experienced and competent motor-cyclist around the salubrious and less than salubrious Chiangmai soys and talangs! He returns this year to learn a bit more about the local geography!

Jack Dunford - He  missed out last year, but couldn’t cope with life in Bangkok any more without a little dose of Chiangmai Sixes’ medicine and magic, so this veteran cricket afficionado will be back, out in the middle and up in Anne’s aerie!

Jim Ford - Jim too missed last year’s tournament, so it’s really good to welcome him back to bring a little Australian culture and know-how from the Northern Territories, into the umpires’ barren lair! Like most Aussies, he’s a quiet, modest, unassuming man!

David Hall - David also was away from Chiangmai last tournament, but he is back this time and is more then ready to umpire both ends and rule the roost in the scorer’s perch. He spends most of his life now in Sydney, educating the peasants, so it’ll be a vast change for him to be in the intellectually stimulating company of the Umps!

Paul Jones - Hagar will be here as usual, (Where else at the beginning of every April for the last fifteen years?) increasing the income of Chiangmai's poor. He is determined to assist the local taverners in their quest for a comfortable future  and a happy retirement.  A very competent umpire and as ever, one of Goughie’s right-hand men.

Jim Middleton - Jim will be here again and will be eager and anxious to share his experiences to anyone who will listen to him at the Sixes Bar; in return for a gin tonic, he’ll recount the low-down on Hong Kong and for another one, he’ll regale you with tales of life on the High Veldt!

Herb Whitlock - aka George Formby, is an indispensable member of the happy band of blind and deaf brethren. (Hang on, I wrote all this last year, and the year before, but it’s so applicable!!) He has for the last seven years flown in from U.K. just to spend a week in the Umpires' tent with his old pals, do the odd stint out in the middle, and then to return to Formby country where he bemoans the fact that it will be 51 more weeks till he strides onto the Chiangmai greensward or slinks into Spotlight again.

Sai Kasturi - Sai from Sri Lanka is now doing his third tournament, but why you’ve never had the pleasure of reading about what a great guy he is (well, not so great – about 5 feet 5 inches!), is that I was never told he was coming, but last Christmas Day, my phone rang and it was Sai, who had obviously been on the cooking sherry in Sri Lanka, ringing to confirm his presence this week. Hi Sai !

Tony Gough - Still domiciled in Phuket, and still sloping up to Chiangmai annually for the odd free beer with his mates. He’s been doing it for twenty years, so what the hell!
