Southerners team photo, 2006
Southerners return this year with some new faces and the return of a couple of old faces, who come in the hope of winning, but more likely to show why they should not still be playing cricket! Will probably have much more success off the field, and will be looking to continue the Southerners tradition this year (we are not sure what the tradition is though).
Peter "Choppy" Goodchap -
Is back for the 3rd time to swing the bat as hard as possible, hopefully hitting it atleast once this year. The slogger from Bangkok will look to fly the Southerners flag high in an attempt to win something (even a raffle will do).
Saurabh "Shogun" Dhanuka -
This Thailand National player has certainly shown why he is a true Southerner, with wild swinging of the bat and fast(well slow medium at best) short wide bowling his trademarks, he is destined for greatness this year. Last years success has made him keen to show more of his prowess this time around.
Swapnil "Bolly" Kaushik -
Last year was a great finding for Bolly, we thought he was a wicket keeper, until he had to bowl, and this year will not get anywhere near the gloves. His hard hitting and terrible haircut make him an essential yet embarrassing member of the Southerners. Look for him in the local Thai discos!
Tony "Tee Tree" Tree -
The first year as a Southerner, but Tony has many Chiangmai tours under his belt, last year with a much better team (we are still paying off the transfer fee) and he is keen to knock plenty of Sixes and bottle tops off during the week. This PE Teacher strikes fear into most opponents, and sometimes he even does this during a game!
Nathan "Nobby" O'Brien -
This nuggety left hander is still in his first season in Bangkok for Southerners after coming from Melbourne and is keen to impress the cricketing gods with his lack of ability, mental nouse or drinking ability (common traits found in most Victorians). He is a soft hitting, ineffective bowler who will most likely do better than all the other Southerners players this year.
James "Mossy" Moss -
Thailand's favourite kiwi Mossy is coming back to Chiangmai after a couple of years layoff, but don't let that worry you, as Mossy will certainly find the middle of the bat (when bowling) this year and nobody will run quick singles to him(they will be easy 3's). Despite this his presence will be much appreciated by the team, as he will certainly come up with some inspirational performances during the week.
Andrew "Speddo"Spedding -
Captain Clueless returns for another year of Chiangmai drinking, with a splash of cricket thrown in for good measure. The left arm speedster (this season clocked at an incredible 76kph) is still opening the bowling in league cricket, and his wily ability his sure to cause trouble for all those in his way. If we can coax him away from "Jack" he will be a valuable member of this years team.
Vaughan "Uncle" McClear -
Uncle Vaughan is the true spirit of Southerners, and his return to Chiangmai is much anticipated, with legends such as Mike Gatting and Trevor Chappell likely to be asking "Who the hell is that wicket keeper lying on the ground injured at fine leg?" His team mates rely on his skills behind the wicket for atleast 20 byes a game, but what he lacks in keeping he certainly makes up for in batting, for this season he almost hit the ball out of the 30 yard circle in a powerful display. Truth be told Uncle Vaughany is the heart of soul of the team and a great cricketer, but please don't tell him we said that!
