Awali Taverners 2006 Team Photo

Congratulations and sincere thanks to everybody who has been involved in running the Chiang Mai International Six-a-Side Tournament for the last twenty years.  In honour of the occasion, Awali Taverners have decided to show that the girls of the Bunny Club/Thirsty Beaver are right; we are butterflies.

Name:

LARGE SKIPPER

Classification:

Bob Phillips (Hesperiidae Enormus).

Natural Habitat:

Rugby Clubs.

SMALL HEATH

Classification:

Barrie Radburn (Satyridae Brummae).

Natural Habitat:

This species will happily live anywhere where it can sleep during the day.

Nocturnal; can be seen drifting aimlessly at night often in the company of the Large Skipper and the Peacock.

Name:

PEACOCK

Classification:

Kevin Lovegrove (Nymphalidae Goonera).

Natural Habitat:

Habitat destroyed by development project.  Now flitting the streets of North London in search of new abode.

Migratory pattern:

Infatuated by the French Red Admiral, so follows it unquestioningly.

Notes:

Eccentric colouring leaves this butterfly susceptible to more belligerent species.

Name:

FLUFFY TIT

Classification:

Steve Turner (Peridae Vaticani)

Natural Habitat:

Confessionals.

Migratory pattern:

This antenna-less species cannot find its way anywhere without assistance.

Notes:

Different sized wings cause this butterfly to veer to the left.

Name:

SWALLOWTAIL

Classification:

Paddy Bateson (Papilionidae Amopommus).

Natural Habitat:

No fixed abode.

Migratory pattern:

Tireless; non-stop between Preston and Chiang Mai.

Notes:

Has a particular liking for apple blossom.

Name:

BATWING

Classification:

Sanjay Rathod (Atrophaneura Sponsusbannus).

Natural Habitat:

Indian native, introduced to South West Asia.

Migratory pattern:

Flies from willow grove to willow grove.

Notes:

Gregarious; enjoys mixing with the females of other species.

Name:

MARBLED WHITE

Classification:

Mano Babiolakis (Satyridae Bubblus).

Natural Habitat:

Greek origin, but has recently been introduced to Africa.

Migratory pattern:

No set pattern but will fly anywhere without its mate.

Notes:

Particularly loved by collectors – notably the Earl of Elgin.

Name:

BLUE-VEINED WHITE

Classification:

Joe Leese (Aporia Scousa).

Natural Habitat:

Reputedly extinct, but has been spotted in places it should not be.

Migratory pattern:

Erratic, follows its mating instinct.

Notes:

If attempting to net this species, beware its mandybles.

Name:

COMMON REDEYE

Classification:

John Scott (Hesperiidae Vodkatonicae).

Natural Habitat:

Unusually for a butterfly, at home on water.

Migratory pattern:

Apt to fly off without warning or known destination.

Notes:

Insatiably thirsty.

Name:

SPECKLED WOOD

Classification:

Nick Ellis (Nymphalidae Touvirginia).

Natural Habitat:

Reputedly at home in any colony.

Migratory pattern:

Yet to be determined.

Name:

MAP

First (spring) generation individual

Classification:

Martin Saunders (Nymphalidae Absenfrendus).
