CRICKET / CHIANG MAI SIXES

Cricketeers take Cup final

Bangladesh entertain crowd with some superb cricket, deserve their moment of glory

By Julian Turner

Bangladesh's Cricketeers won a somewhat one-sided Cup final against England's Ashwell Crusaders in the showpiece game of yesterday's Chiang Mai Sixes. The Cricketeers fully deserved their moment of glory and left the scenic Gymkhana Club undefeated after entertaining the crowd with some superb cricket.

The Bangladeshis opened at the crease and Summy cracked a four on their second ball to get up and running.

They batted aggressively but soon lost their first wicket when skipper Mahmud was caught for three runs. England's Ashwell bowled with aplomb in the first two overs and some keen eyes in the field kept the Bangladesh side muzzled.

But the Cricketeers showed their class and switched tactics for some intelligent fours along the grass to pick their way through for the runs before resuming the power play. One ball was hit by Robin for eight after a no ball was smashed 30 feet over the boundary.

He hit two consecutive sixes to retire with 31 and was deservedly applauded by the appreciative crowd as he left the field. The Cricketeers finished with 92/1 as the rain clouds hovered near the Gymkhana ground.

Following a quick break for water, Ashwell returned to try and bat for 93 to win the premier division.

The Crusaders managed 14 from the first over, with two sixes, to keep them in the hunt but then stalled slightly in the second over to reach 26 and lost a wicket into the bargain too. Ashwell forged to 46 at the start of the fourth over but had lost their earlier momentum. A quick-fire collapse of two wickets scuppered their cause further and the game gradually petered out to 62/4 to hand the Cricketeers their victory.

In the Shield final, Bahrain's Awali Taverners had to chase a score of 86/1 from China-based expat side Shanghai Dragons.

The game was temporarily stopped in the second over due to high swirling winds, which kicked up a dust storm around the ground.

Awali tried valiantly but their 62/0 meant the Dragons went home with the trophy.

The Bowl final started the day yesterday with Wales' Marchwiel Outlaws proving too much for Australia's Lords Taverners.

The Taverners were pegged back for 54/4 while the Outlaws powered to 77/1. D Morrison was the star for the winners with two sixes and three fours in his knock of 32 before retiring.

The Plate was next up with South Africa's Almar opening the batting against the Taranaki Taverners, from New Zealand.

The first ball looked destined for a catch but it dropped through some slippery fingers to go for a four.

Almar pushed on for 88/1 with some creditable batting, including 33 from T Eksteen before he retired. That proved too much for Taranaki, who fell four runs short with 84 despite a thumping 33 from G Robertson.

The day concluded with the Spoon final between Thai-based expat outfit Camel Bar Humps and England's Armadillos.

The Humps totalled 58/4 as the light faded and the Armadillos had to battle through the rain and wind to post a winning total of 59/0 to conclude the tournament.
