CHIANG MAI SIXES

Bangladesh shatter record at Gymkhana

PETER CUMMINS

Chiang Mai _ The Bangladeshi Cricketeers hit a tournament record 113/2 in their five overs on the second day of the 19th Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes, being played at the Gymkhana Cricket Ground. Khaled Mahmud, a former Bangladeshi captain, hit 30 ret. and Robin, 32 ret. as they gave British team Blythswood (49/3) a cricket lesson.

Also reaching the century mark were the Moonshine Warathais, who hit 102/0 against the South African side Almar. Rookie Warathai Ashley Weekes belted five sixes off six balls, former Australian Test player Trevor Chappell hit 33 ret and Ian Liddell notched 31 ret.

In reply Almar could only make 41/3.

Next up were the Brits, the Ashwell Crusaders, with 88/0 (Jonothan Powell 31 ret., Tom Harvey 30 ret.) thrashing the Awali Taverners 47/1.

Experienced Sixes team the Gloucestershire Gipsies hit 75/0 (R. Goodchop, 30 n.o., J. Karcuer, 31 ret.) which was too much for the Aussie Southerners who could only manage 44/4.

Jamesons Dilettantes knocked up 48/5 but last year's Cup runners-up the Marchwiel Outlaws overcame that with 49/1.

The sixth game of the day was between Aussies Perth Postels and the Irish Pub Gang Greens.

The lads from Oz in the (t)rusty care of Sixes King Michael 'Cat' Maher, slammed 86 for no loss (Cameron Park, 30 ret.) and quietly annihilated the Irish Pub boys from Bangkok 48/2, with only Tony Tree making an impact with 32 n.o.

The Tokyo Wombats compiled 60/1 (C. Jones, 33 ret.) but they were overhauled by the Surrey Vagrants who made 62/1.

After losing on Sunday, Divine Fellons got back on track by hitting 65/4 (R. Ormiston 33 ret.) against the Lords Taveners 52/4.

Yarrambat 66/1 overcame Darjeeling 65/1, with wicket-keeper Brad Wissink top scoring with 33 ret.

The strangely-named Camel Bar Humps managed 49/2 to defeat the home-towner Gymkhana Cavaliers 48/2.

Spoon favourites Armadillo 76/0 (Jones 33 ret) proved too good for the real Wombats 74/1.

'Dasher' topping the Wombat's score with 31 ret.

Local team Sugar Shack Postels (45/1) had an excellent win over Marchwiel Outlaws (44/2) thanks to a a magnificent knock of 35 ret by Imran Indrees.

The strong Warathais side completed a good day for them by hitting 92/2 against the Shanghai Dragons who could only muster 45/0.

An encouraging sign is that six Thai boys who have risen through the ranks of the junior Sawadee Cricket programme, are now playing for senior teams in the main Sixes tournament.
