The big hitters flexed their muscles on the second day of the ongoing 17th Chiang Mai Sixes at the Gymkhana Club yesterday.
The best innings of the day came from Chris Vester, the youngest member of the Almar C.C. team from South Africa.
Vester hammered 35 out of their total of 69-0, finishing with a massive six, as Almar defeated Bangladeshi team Commonwealth,
who made 66-3.
Another batsman to make his mark was former Essex County captain Paul Prichard who hit 29 not out as Surrey Vagrants from
England beat UAE-based Darjeeling and then returned to the wicket to slam 31 retired as the Vagrants eased past Malaysian side
Silver State.
Perennial contenders Perth Postels from Western Australia relied on trusty South African guest star Kenny Jackson (32 retired)
as they beat England's Ashwell Crusaders and W. Risdale made 31 as Cup holders Gloucestershire Gipsies 62-0 defeated Spain-based
Javea Wanderers.
There were some weary heads following Sunday's splendid opening party sponsored, as usual, by the Tourism Authority of Thailand
and held at the Pornping Tower.
Tournament director Maurice Bromley pointed out that several of the teams had appeared at every tournament since the first
event in 1988, the Wombats, the Drifters and Darjeeling, noting with regret the demise of Joe Carpenter, the driving force
behind the team.
Bromley was effusive in his praise of all the participants over the years, pointing out that their generosity had under-written
the highly-successful Chiang Mai Schools Cricket Association, with this year's 5th Sawasdee Cup helping to ''build a future
for cricket in Thailand".
