Team Motto "Bridging Cultural Gaps with Cash and Alcohol"
Team Song (to the tune of "Under the Southern Cross")
"In the Safari Bar we stand, Tequila slammers in our hand, Farangs
in a foreign land, Thailand you little bewdy!"*
The land of smiles we have come To drink some Chiang and have some fun Some
cricket to, we've come to win Forgive father for I have sinned
Thailand you little bewdy * (local variations may apply).

Southerners return for our third entry at the Chiang Mai. In 2000, David
Kenwery (dk), Vaughan McClear, Prashant Nandha (Pompy) and Wayne Whitten (Whits)
played under the banner of "Thai Cricket Association" whilst last
season we played under our own name. We play in the Thai Cricket League (TCL)
and are made up of resident and exiled expats from Bangkok. Our best performance
was winning the TCL in 1999. Since then we haved failed to recapture that
form as key team members have moved on.
Both times at Chiang Mai we have been knocked out by Wally and Steve's local
incarnations. Last year's Bowl semi final against the DIRTZ was a thriller
reminiscent of the 1999 World Cup semi final. Maybe this year will be third
time lucky for Southerners.
Some highlights from last year included :
- The visit of the club patron and Australian Ambassador to Thailand Miles
Kupa to the Southerners tent.
- Watta taking 4 for 4 in what some experts described as the best over
ever at the sixes.
- A memorable match against Cup winners Hampton Hound Dogs
- The (too many to list) activities of Andrew Barns
This year a presentation of one of our ugly tour shirts will be made to
the
Chiang Mai Tuk Tuk Drivers Association in recognition of the inspiration for
our apparel for last year's cabaret night.
Recently a band of Southerners (dk, Pompy, Jonno Seifman and Pete Sheehan)
teamed up with Chiang Mai identities "Cat" Maher, the amazing Cyrus
Maybud and Steve "Crunch" Christie to play as "Safari Bar"
at the Waratah Sixes in Newcastle in January. We performed well, toured the
Hunter Valley wineries and had a great time around the nightspots of Hamilton.
Crunch, "Reds" Liddell and all the Waratahs are to be congratulated
on an
excellent tournament and the fantastic welcome given to our tourists.
Good luck to the Warathais, Kirkby Malzeard, Kelawar CC and Steve and
Wally's boys (whatever they are called this year)and all our other friends
in Chiang Mai 2002.

Vaughan McClear
The Coorporoo Cowboy returns to lead Southerners after last years sojourn
in the USA. After a bloodless coup he has ousted dk as captain, so Vaughan
should feature in batting, bowling and keeping roles. Expect strong and refreshed
showings with the bat in the early part of the week and tired and insipid
performances towards the end as a long hard week of cricket and nocturnal activities
take their toll.
Prashant "Pompy" Nandha
Pompy is now the most experienced tourist in the line up and now spends
his days in transit between Sydney, Japan and Fiji. No matter where is in
the world he is always up for a game with Southerners. Still has the same
whippy action, although at Newcastle some of his bowling more resembled Mr
Whippy. Has so much time when batting, so lie down on a hammock with a beer
in your hand and watch Pompy make it look so easy.
Graeme "Watta" Pitty
The holder of the most original nickname in Thai cricket, Watta is keen
to
prove that last year's performances were a complete fluke so he can devote
more time to some serious socialising. A former teammate at Bankstown of Jeff
Thomson and Lenny Pascoe, these days Watta holds an important community service
position in Bangkok, notably as manager of the Austaralian Embassy's Friday
night watering hole "The Bunyip Bar". Those of you who were fortunate
enough to be at the Irish pub with Watta and Gatts were treated to some hilarious
recollections from their days in Sydney grade cricket. Dixie from the Postels
was there but I am sure he will not remember a thing however.
James Moss
The big Kiwi will be brimming with confidence after his axe handle shoulders
clubbed some powerful hitting displays last year. Unfortunately his birthday
party probably contributed to our team's downfall in the semi.
Any dietary expert will tell you that a mixture of hot dogs, sauerkraut and
birthday cake washed down by copious quantities of beer, wine and schapps
is not the ideal preparation for a big match the next day. It was an excellent
party however. Mossy's son Henry fulfils the duties as our team mascot.
Jonno Seifman
A tight wicket to wicket bowler well suited to sixes cricket. His "stand
and deliver" approach to batting sparkled at the Waratah Sixes. Jonno
also featured prominently in the after match festivities along Beaumont St.
A member of the victorious TCL 1999 side, Jonno has turned out for Lamma CC
after his recent move to Hong Kong.
Leigh Whitten
Expect another whole hearted performance from Leigh who "kind of"
behaved himself in the early part of the week and then later returned to the
true form that we have some to expect and admire. Leigh has been practicising
his drop punts after a few wayward kicks of his footy in the Pornping Hotel
car park resulted in hurried exits from the scene by the boys. Likely to record
some sound performances with the bat and ball now that Wayne is not coming
and the pressure of rivalry with his older (more talented?) brother has been
lifted.
Rayner Blitz
After Watta, Rayner is the only other Southerner to play first class cricket
in the Somerset side that featured Viv Richards, Beefy Botham and the Big
Bird in the late '80's. These days our "Austin Powers" spends his
time
playing cricket, saving the world from evil and being surrounded by
shagadelic ladies in the Bristol area (boom boom) and at Pattaya.
Andrew Barns
Our lesser known team connection to diplomatic circles is Barnsy (aka Farnsy
or Farnsworth) who carries the title of the "Trobbriand Ambassador".
An exceptional debut in CM 2001 was highlighted by his "songthaew surfing"
exploits which may form part of the pre-match entertainment for the Cup Final.
Activities Manager Barnsy is at short odds to streak at some stage in the
tournament.
Gavin Brown
Gavin gained legendary status in our side for his amazing Dean Jones-like
fielding performances in the desolate rocky outfield of the AIT Ground in
Rangsit that makes parts of Afghanistan look like the MCG. He also qualifies
as a bona fide Southerners hero by the as yet unsubtantiated claim that he
has a tab at Safari Bar and most other hospitality establishments in Patpong.
Brett Young
A first time call up for Brett, rumoured to be in the Nathan Bracken mould.
Dave Dufall
Always a feature of any Southerners line up. DD adds words of praise,
wisdom and timely reminders to errant team members regarding exactly whose
shout it is.
Nick Chomomter
A feature of Thai cricket administration in recent years, Nick has eveloped
his growing reputation around high level policy sessions with the likes of
Vaughan and DD in the hot bed of cricket that is Soi Cowboy.
Players "in absentia".
David Kenwery (dk)
The tricolour flag of Puerto Rico will be missing from the Southerners tent
this time around. However dk will be closely following our performances on
the Sixes website.
Wayne Whitten
If dk is the champion spark plug of Southerners, then Whits must be the
WD40 that makes the team a finely tuned cricketing machine. Expect far less
cohesion, over heating and more friction on hard and soft surfaces in
Wayne's absence. Watch out 2003.
Dave Henderson (Hendo)
The Travelling Wilburys that are David and Danielle Henderson have pitched
their wagon in London now. The "Banjo Patterson" of our side, he
penned the team song. Look out for some additional verses and stirring renditions
in Chiang Mai 2003.
