ASHWELL CRUSADERS

PAUL THWAITES - CAPTAIN

Chief Executive of Ashwell Group Ltd and Captain of Ashwell Crusaders. Played in debut match for the Bunbury Celebrity XI V Norma Major XI match at Alconbury in the summer. Took a stunning diving catch off the bowling of Lloyd Honeyghan only to be presented with a massive kiss on the cheek from Lloyd. After the match Paul was interviewed by the media and asked how did you feel about the kiss from Lloyd: "I wasn't going to argue now was I"

Nicknamed the 'Wing Commander' who is currently being trained by Mike Gatting and has lost 4 stone since last year's tournament.

Former Cambridgeshire schools and tours to many parts of the world, as well as being a qualified cricket coach. Watch out for the very controlled flat bat over mid wicket.

Ashwell Crusaders also triumphed in November returning home from the USA victorious as Champions of the Sarasota Six a side tournament.

MIKE GATTING OBE

Right-handed batsman, right arm medium bowler, slip fielder. England career 1977 to 1995. Mike was one of the heroes of the England set up in the 1980's. He was the last England Captain to win the Ashes on their victorious tour of Australia 1986-87and is something of a legend for his culinary habits.

'Gatt' was one of the best batsmen of his generation.

Awarded OBE in 1987 for services to cricket.

Retired from Test Cricket after the final Test of the 1994-95 series against Australia, however, continued to play County Cricket setting a new Middlesex record for the first wicket, becoming the second-highest run scorer in Middlesex history and his record of 14 County trophy wins as a player is unequalled. Retired from County cricket at the end of 1998 season and was appointed Middlesex director of coaching until end of 2000.

Mike is now a Director of Ashwell Leisure Ltd.

A regular tourer with Paul Thwaites and the Ashwell Crusaders since Chiang Mai 2001, Captained the Ashwell Crusaders in August 2001 against the Bunbury Cricket Team in aid of Sargent Cancer Care of Children and was a key member in the team that clinched the cup in Sarasota.

PAUL LACK

Another Ashwell Crusader regular. Probably the best travelled cricketer in the side. He has toured with the skipper to Singapore, Hong Kong, Kula Lumper, Malaysia, Holland, Chang Mai, Portugal, Florida and Barbados to name but a few.

Paul Thwaites remembers bowling a 14 over stint with Paul at the Hong Kong Cricket Club in 1986 where they took 8 wickets between them to win the game.

Still revelling from our last victory in Sarasota.

NEIL BILLING

Middle order batsman (could be tricky in Sixes having all middle order batsmen) and military medium bowler who has been with the Vagrants to the West Indies, Spain, Gibraltar and South Africa. Attended the same school as Alec Stewart but several decades earlier. Plays cricket for Tenterden. He is a surveyor.

ADRIAN CADE

Nick-named AD - played many times for the Crusaders. Captain of Cambridge and Godmanchester Cricket Club. Has played representative cricket.

Right handed batsman and medium pace bowler (he thinks he's fast!). Again another valuable member of the team that toured to Sarasota in November.

WILL STANTON

Will has captained west Norfolk Cricket Club for the past four years. Prior to that he has played club and schoolboys cricket to a high standard. He is a attacking low order batsman and a useful medium pace seamer...although he still thinks he is fast. Memorable moments include six aside tournament with Mark Waugh.

Making his debut with the Crusaders this April.

NOTE FROM THE CAPTAIN - PAUL THWAITES

I am delighted to be attending the Chiang Mai tournament again this year. Ashwell Crusaders is a touring, fun filled side and I am sure that our players will contribute to the already very colourful tournament.

I have known Mike Gatting for many years and am enormously pleased that he will be joining us.

Particular thanks to Maurice and Rick for inviting us to the tournament who I know will make our visit enjoyable as ever.

The Crusaders motto:

A Crusader stands for freedom Stands for fun, stands forever being young
So do a good turn unto others Never turn from your quest For you are a crusader And a crusader does his best
